Theo Angelopoulos developed a cinema of extreme duration and historical scope, filming the landscape of Greece and the Balkans with long, slow, pan shots that treated geography as the carrier of collective memory and political grief. The Travelling Players (1975) covered three decades of Greek political history in a four-hour sequence of tracking shots. He died in 2012 when he was struck by a motorcycle while scouting locations for his final film.
