Věra Chytilová

Filmmaker
Czech·b. 1929

Known for: Daisies (1966); Czech New Wave

Věra Chytilová was the most formally radical director of the Czech New Wave of the 1960s, making Daisies (1966) — a film of two young women gleefully destroying everything they encounter, shot in fragmented cuts, superimpositions, and color filters — that was banned by Czechoslovak authorities for "depicting the wanton." She continued making films under varying degrees of official restriction for the following four decades, remaining an active and combative presence in Czech cinema until her death.
