Known for: documentary portraits of Black LGBTQ+ communities in South Africa

Zanele Muholi has documented the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in South Africa, primarily Black lesbian and transgender women, since 2004, describing their practice as visual activism rather than photography. Their series Faces and Phases, begun in 2006, has grown to more than 500 formal black-and-white portraits. They were appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2020.
