About

Why this site exists.

I wanted to know what gear my favorite artists actually use. I couldn’t find a reliable reference, so I built one.

What it is

Art is Hard is a community-sourced reference for fine artists, photographers, and filmmakers and the gear they use. Every connection between an artist and a piece of gear is sourced from an interview, book, documentary, social media post, or other verifiable reference.

What makes it different

The information I was looking for was scattered across interviews, books, documentaries, and social media posts. Art is Hard brings it together in one place. Every connection includes a source, so you can see exactly where it came from. The site is community-driven: anyone can submit an artist or suggest a gear connection, and every submission goes through editorial review before it goes live.

No ads

Art is Hard will never run display ads. The site is sustained through affiliate links. When you buy gear through a link here, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Read the full No Ads Pledge.
