Andrea Arnold won the Academy Award for Best Short Film for Wasp (2003) before directing features characterized by handheld intimacy, social realism, and a particular attention to the physical experience of poverty in Britain. Fish Tank (2009) won the Jury Prize at Cannes; American Honey (2016), her first American film, spent months following its cast of young people across the country. She adapted Wuthering Heights (2011) with a Black actor in the role of Heathcliff.
