Frida Kahlo

Painter
Mexican·b. 1907
Known for:
autobiographical self-portraiture; The Two Fridas (1939)
Education:
Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, Mexico City; self-taught as painter

Frida Kahlo began painting after a bus accident in 1925 left her with lifelong injuries that became central subjects of her self-portraits, in which physical pain, Mexican folk culture, and her tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera are rendered with an intensity that defied the conventional categories of Mexican and European art. She aligned herself with Surrealism but refused the label, describing her paintings as depictions of reality rather than dreams. Her work was largely overlooked at her death in 1954 and was rediscovered by feminist art historians in the 1970s.

Sennelier

Connection note

Kahlo used oil paints including Sennelier, which was available through art supply shops in Mexico City. Her materials are documented in conservation studies of her paintings at the Museo Frida Kahlo.

Product description

Sennelier has manufactured artists' oil colours in Paris since 1887, supplying Cézanne, Monet, Picasso, and subsequent generations from its shop on the Quai Voltaire across from the Louvre. Its Extra-Fine range uses traditional pigments ground in safflower oil for maximum color purity and lightfastness.
