Ingmar Bergman

Filmmaker
Swedish·b. 1918

Known for: The Seventh Seal (1957), Scenes from a Marriage (1973)

Ingmar Bergman made more than 50 films and hundreds of stage productions, developing a body of work centered on the search for meaning in the absence of God, the psychology of creative work, and the intimacies of long relationships. He worked primarily with a small company of collaborators — actors Liv Ullmann and Harriet Andersson, cinematographer Sven Nykvist — over decades. His films The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), and Scenes from a Marriage (1973) are among the most widely studied in cinema.
