Jane Campion became the second woman in history to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes for The Piano (1993), which also won her the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. She grew up in New Zealand and has maintained an antipodean perspective in films that explore women's interiority, desire, and social constriction. The Power of the Dog (2021) won her the Academy Award for Best Director - the second woman ever to receive it.
