Known for: large-format portrait photography of indigenous communities

Jimmy Nelson has spent more than two decades photographing indigenous communities in Papua New Guinea, Mongolia, Ethiopia, and elsewhere, working with large-format cameras to produce monumental portrait images. His project Before They Pass Away (2013) generated significant debate among anthropologists and indigenous rights advocates about the ethics of ethnographic photography. He has also worked in conservation advocacy.
