Juergen Teller

Photographer
German·b. 1964

Known for: lo-fi fashion and portrait photography

Juergen Teller began his career photographing musicians in the early 1990s — Kurt Cobain, Björk, Courtney Love — before moving into fashion, where his deliberately lo-fi aesthetic distinguished him from the prevailing glossy conventions of the industry. He has shot advertising campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Céline for more than two decades. He uses a simple flash and a compact camera, and has described his work as depending entirely on trust between himself and his subjects.

Contax T2

Contax

Produced from 1990 to 2000, the T2 is a compact 35mm camera with a fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar 38mm f/2.8 lens. Its combination of high optical quality and small form factor made it widely used among photographers working informally.

Teller is closely associated with the Contax T2 compact camera, which he has discussed as central to his lo-fi aesthetic in multiple interviews.
