Kathryn Bigelow began making films in the early 1980s and received the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker (2008) — the first woman to win the award. She studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and theoretical film at Columbia before directing. Her subsequent film Zero Dark Thirty (2012), documenting the hunt for Osama bin Laden, generated significant political controversy for its depiction of enhanced interrogation.
