Minor White

Photographer
American·b. 1908

Known for: co-founder of Aperture and mystically inflected landscape photography

Minor White was a photographer, editor, and teacher whose influence extended well beyond his own work through his co-founding of Aperture magazine in 1952 and his long tenure at MIT. His photographs drew on Zen Buddhism and the writings of G.I. Gurdjieff, approaching photography as a form of contemplative practice. He was an early advocate of Ansel Adams's Zone System.
