Peter Lindbergh

Photographer
German·b. 1944

Known for: black-and-white fashion photography

Peter Lindbergh developed a black-and-white fashion style in the 1980s that prioritized the expressiveness of his subjects over conventional glamour. His 1989 shoot on a Santa Monica beach — featuring six largely unknown models including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford — is credited with establishing the supermodel as a cultural phenomenon. He was invited by Meghan Markle to edit the September 2019 issue of British Vogue, the last major project he completed before his death.

Contax T2

Contax

Produced from 1990 to 2000, the T2 is a compact 35mm camera with a fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar 38mm f/2.8 lens. Its combination of high optical quality and small form factor made it widely used among photographers working informally.

Lindbergh has discussed using the Contax T2 compact camera in multiple interviews about his working method; the camera's portability suited his preference for working closely with subjects without imposing studio formality.
