Taryn Simon works at the intersection of photography, text, and institutional critique, embedding herself in legal and bureaucratic systems and documenting what those systems contain and conceal. Her series The Innocents (2003) photographed men and women who had been wrongfully convicted, returning them to the scenes of alleged offenses. She later collaborated with Aaron Sorkin on an opera based on her An Occupation of Loss installation.
