Yorgos Lanthimos

Filmmaker
Greek·b. 1973

Known for: Poor Things (2023), The Favourite (2018)

Yorgos Lanthimos developed his filmmaking in the Greek Weird Wave of the late 2000s, directing Dogtooth (2009) — a formally controlled film of extreme domestic isolation that won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes — before moving to English-language films. The Favourite (2018) won him the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice; Poor Things (2023) won the Golden Lion. He works with fixed camera positions and flat delivery of dialogue that foregrounds the artifice of his scenarios.
