Annie Leibovitz became chief photographer at Rolling Stone in the early 1970s, developing a practice of environmental portraiture she later brought to Vanity Fair. Her final portrait of John Lennon, made hours before his murder in December 1980, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. She was designated a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.
