Grayson Perry is a British artist best known for his elaborately decorated ceramic vases that address themes of identity, class, gender, and social violence. He builds his earthenware vessels using the traditional coil technique, applying layers of colored slips, underglazes, photographic transfers, sgraffito, stamps, and gold lustre across multiple firings. He won the Turner Prize in 2003, becoming the first ceramic artist to receive the award. Perry also works in tapestry, printmaking, and cast iron sculpture, and is widely known as a broadcaster and writer. He was knighted in the 2023 New Year Honours.
Product description
Low-fire clay body that matures between Cone 06 and Cone 02 (roughly 1000-1100C). Its porosity and lower firing temperature preserve bright glaze colors and allow photographic transfers, making it the standard body for decorative and narrative ceramics.
Connection note
Product description
Colored ceramic coatings applied to bisqueware or greenware before glaze firing. Underglazes contain ceramic pigments suspended in a clay-based medium and retain their color through the glaze firing, allowing detailed painting and decoration under a transparent glaze layer.
