Herb Ritts began photographing his actor and model friends in Los Angeles in the late 1970s with a formal clarity influenced by classical sculpture and the California light. His advertising campaigns for Gap, Versace, and Armani reached global audiences; he also directed music videos for Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. He died of complications from pneumonia in 2002.
