Known for:
black-and-white wildlife and conservation photography in East Africa
Education:
Saint Martin's School of Art, London; self-taught in photography

Nick Brandt began photographing the animals of East Africa in the late 1990s with a medium format camera and natural light, producing black-and-white portraits of individual lions, elephants, and chimpanzees that emphasized their individuality. His trilogy On This Earth, A Shadow Falls, Across the Ravaged Land (published between 2005 and 2013) documents both the animals and the accelerating loss of their habitat. He co-founded the conservation organization Big Life Foundation in 2010.

Connection note

Brandt used the Pentax 67 for his black-and-white wildlife portraits in East Africa, relying on natural light and close proximity to animals. His use of the camera is documented in interviews accompanying "On This Earth" (2005).

Product description

The Pentax 67 is a medium format SLR producing 6×7cm negatives on 120 film. Introduced in 1969, its SLR handling in a medium format body made it practical for handheld work requiring larger negatives than 35mm. It was widely adopted by portrait, landscape, and fashion photographers.
