Jasper Johns

Painter
American·b. 1930
Known for:
Flag (1954–55); the targets and numbers paintings
Education:
University of South Carolina (briefly); Parsons School of Design (briefly); largely self-taught

Jasper Johns began in 1954 making paintings of flags, targets, numbers, and maps - common, two-dimensional objects that existed in the world as images - in a practice that simultaneously referenced Abstract Expressionism and questioned its premises. His Flag (1954–55) is among the most discussed single paintings in postwar American art. He has worked consistently with encaustic, lithography, and sculptural forms alongside painting for more than 60 years.

Connection note

Johns used Bocour encaustic and oil paints for "Flag" (1954-55) and his subsequent targets and numbers paintings. His use of encaustic is documented in conservation studies at MoMA.

Product description

Magna was a line of acrylic resin paints manufactured by Leonard Bocour in New York from the 1940s. Unlike water-based acrylics, Magna dissolved in turpentine and dried to a matte finish. It was used by Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, and Roy Lichtenstein. Production ceased in the 1990s.
