Larry Burrows covered the Vietnam War for Life magazine beginning in 1962, developing a formal approach to color combat photography that had few predecessors. His 1966 essay "One Ride with Yankee Papa 13" followed a helicopter crew through a mission in which crew members were killed or wounded, and was among the most visceral pieces of photo-essay journalism of the war. He died when his helicopter was shot down over Laos on February 10, 1971.

Introduced in 1959, the Nikon F was Japan's first professional 35mm SLR. Its rugged construction, interchangeable viewfinders, and the F-mount lens system made it the predominant camera in photojournalism and war photography through the 1970s.
