Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Filmmaker
Turkish·b. 1959
Known for:
Winter Sleep (2014), Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011)
Education:
Boğaziçi University (BS, Electrical Engineering); Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (film, did not complete)

Nuri Bilge Ceylan trained as a photographer before directing films, and his cinematography - long takes of the Turkish landscape, faces in conversation - reflects a still photographer's attention to light and duration. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) won the Grand Prix at Cannes; Winter Sleep (2014) won the Palme d'Or. He has cited Chekhov and Bergman as central influences on his screenplay writing.
