Nuri Bilge Ceylan trained as a photographer before directing films, and his cinematography — long takes of the Turkish landscape, faces in conversation — reflects a still photographer's attention to light and duration. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011) won the Grand Prix at Cannes; Winter Sleep (2014) won the Palme d'Or. He has cited Chekhov and Bergman as central influences on his screenplay writing.
