Wolfgang Tillmans
PhotographerKnown for: photography across documentary, abstract, and political modes
Wolfgang Tillmans has maintained a practice that resists categorization, producing work that spans portraiture, landscape, abstract darkroom experiments, and political activism. He became the first photographer and the first non-British artist to receive the Turner Prize, in 2000. He prints and installs his own photographs, using the display format — unpredictable scales, images pinned directly to the wall — as a compositional tool.
