Andreas Gursky

Photographer
German·b. 1955
Known for:
large-scale photographs of globalized environments
Education:
Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen; Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (under Bernd and Hilla Becher)

Andreas Gursky studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Academy and has developed a practice of large-scale photography that uses extensive post-production to construct images of overwhelming visual complexity. His photograph Rhein II (1999) sold at Christie's in 2011 for $4.3 million, the highest price paid for a photograph at auction at that time. He photographs stock exchanges, supermarkets, factories, and panoramic landscapes with equal dispassion.

Connection note

Gursky used large-format view cameras including the Sinar P2 for his panoramic photographs before transitioning to digital medium format. Documented in interviews accompanying his Kunstmuseum Basel retrospective.

Connection note

Gursky uses Adobe Photoshop extensively for post-production compositing and image manipulation, constructing his large-scale photographs from multiple exposures. This is documented in his published interviews and exhibition materials.

Product description

Adobe Photoshop, first released in 1990, is the standard image editing software used by photographers, designers, and artists. Its layering system, color management tools, and extensive plugin ecosystem have made it indispensable in professional photography and digital art workflows.
