Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist born in Tokyo in 1962. He studied Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, earning a PhD in 1993. He founded the Superflat movement, which flattens distinctions between high art and commercial culture by drawing on anime, manga, and otaku subculture alongside classical Japanese painting traditions. In 2001 he established Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., a production company that manages artists and operates studios, galleries, and merchandise lines. His work spans painting, sculpture, film, and fashion collaborations, notably a long partnership with Louis Vuitton.

Acrylic paint — pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion — dries quickly to a water-resistant finish and can be thinned with water or medium. Introduced commercially in the 1950s, it became the dominant alternative to oil paint for contemporary painters working in flat color, mixed media, and large-scale formats.
