James Jean is a Taiwanese-American painter and illustrator born in Taiwan and raised in New Jersey. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in 2001, he became one of the most celebrated comic book cover artists of his generation, winning seven Eisner Awards and three Harvey Awards for his work on DC/Vertigo's Fables series. In 2008 he retired from commercial illustration to focus on fine art, producing large-scale paintings that blend surrealism, baroque composition, and Asian visual traditions. His work has been exhibited at MoMA, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, and Lotte Museum of Art in Seoul, and he has collaborated with Prada, Apple, and Guillermo del Toro.
