Paweł Pawlikowski left Poland as a teenager and made documentary films in England for the BBC before returning to Polish subjects in his late features. Ida (2013) — a black-and-white film about a young nun discovering her Jewish origins in 1960s Poland — won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Cold War (2018), a love story spanning two decades of postwar Polish history, won him Best Director at Cannes.
