American·b. 1955
Known for:
gestural abstract painting and animated comics
Education:
School of Visual Arts (BFA, 1979); Bard College (MFA, 1995)

Amy Sillman has developed a painting practice rooted in Abstract Expressionism that consistently introduces comic imagery, digitally printed elements, and explicit political content - particularly around feminism and queer experience - into her gestural canvases. She teaches at Bard College and is among the most intellectually engaged painters working in New York, combining rigorous formal concerns with accessible wit.

Connection note

Used in combination with oil on canvas, as in Hamlet (2001-2002)

Product description

Solid sticks of oil paint made by combining pigment, drying oil, and wax into a crayon-like form. Oil bars allow direct, hands-on mark-making without brushes while remaining fully compatible with traditional oil paints and mediums. They form a thin skin on the surface when stored but stay workable underneath. Drying time and blending behavior match conventional oils.
