Brice Marden studied at Yale under Josef Albers and developed a practice of monochrome encaustic painting in the 1960s that was among the most reductive in American art, before introducing gestural calligraphic line - inspired by Chinese and Greek script - into large multi-panel works in the 1980s. His Cold Mountain series (1989–91) is among the most significant bodies of work in American painting of the period. His paintings command prices consistently above $10 million at auction.
