Noah Baumbach began his career as a writer on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou before directing The Squid and the Whale (2005), a semi-autobiographical account of his parents' divorce that established him as a central figure in the American independent cinema of the 2000s. His long creative partnership with Greta Gerwig - first as collaborator, then as director herself - produced Frances Ha (2012) and several other films. Marriage Story (2019) received six Academy Award nominations.
