Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott trained as a production designer before directing Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982), both of which established visual standards for science fiction cinema that subsequent productions have engaged with for decades. He later directed Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), and The Martian (2015) across a range of genres distinguished by the same attention to visual environment. He was knighted in 2003.
