Wes Anderson developed a highly recognizable formal vocabulary - symmetrical compositions, lateral tracking shots, precise color palettes, whimsical production design - that has been both influential and contested as a mode of cinematic expression. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) established him as one of the most commercially successful American art directors working in film. He has also made two stop-motion animated features.
