Alfred Hitchcock

Filmmaker
British-American·b. 1899
Known for:
Psycho (1960), Vertigo (1958)
Education:
Saint Ignatius College, London; University of London (art classes)

Alfred Hitchcock directed more than 50 films across a career spanning the silent era through the 1970s, developing the formal language of cinematic suspense - the zoom, the MacGuffin, the subjective point-of-view shot - that influenced generations of filmmakers. He worked first in Britain before moving to Hollywood in 1939. His run of films in the 1950s and early 1960s - Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960) - constitutes one of the most sustained creative periods in cinema.

Connection note

Hitchcock used Mitchell cameras for his Hollywood productions including "Rear Window" (1954), "Vertigo" (1958), and "Psycho" (1960). The Mitchell BNC was the standard studio camera during the peak of his career.

Product description

The Mitchell BNC (Blimped Newsreel Camera) was the standard studio motion picture camera in Hollywood from the 1930s through the 1960s. Its rock-steady registration, optical viewfinder, and compatibility with studio lighting rigs made it the instrument of classical Hollywood cinematography.
