Peter Doig
PainterScottish·b. 1959
Known for: atmospheric landscape painting; White Canoe (1990–91)
Peter Doig grew up in Scotland, Trinidad, and Canada before settling in Trinidad, and has drawn on these landscapes — snowfields, tropical forests, bodies of water — throughout a painting practice that treats memory, solitude, and cultural displacement as its primary subjects. His paintings were largely unknown outside specialist circles until a 1994 shortlisting for the Turner Prize; his White Canoe (1990–91) sold for $11.3 million at Sotheby's in 2007. He has lived and worked in Trinidad for most of the past two decades.
