Peter Doig

Painter
Scottish·b. 1959
Known for:
atmospheric landscape painting; White Canoe (1990–91)
Education:
Wimbledon School of Art; Saint Martin's School of Art; Chelsea School of Art (MA, 1989-1990)

Peter Doig grew up in Scotland, Trinidad, and Canada before settling in Trinidad, and has drawn on these landscapes - snowfields, tropical forests, bodies of water - throughout a painting practice that treats memory, solitude, and cultural displacement as its primary subjects. His paintings were largely unknown outside specialist circles until a 1994 shortlisting for the Turner Prize; his White Canoe (1990–91) sold for $11.3 million at Sotheby's in 2007. He has lived and worked in Trinidad for most of the past two decades.

Connection note

Doig uses oil paints for his atmospheric landscape paintings. His materials and technique are discussed in catalog essays and published interviews.

Product description

Winsor & Newton has manufactured artists' oil colours in London since 1832, and its professional-grade line remains one of the most widely used in studio painting worldwide. The range covers more than 120 pigments, each ground in cold-pressed linseed or safflower oil to a standard of consistency that has changed little since the nineteenth century. Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon were among the many painters who worked from the Winsor & Newton range throughout their careers.
